Diwali rangoli design is made during the Diwali festival. Rangoli design is a traditional Indian art form generally drawn on floor to adorn the main entrances of Indian homes for beautifying them. Diwali rangoli design is created to ring in the festivals and special occasions with pomp and gaiety.

“Rangoli” is a Sanskrit word which signifies a creative expression of art through colors. The designs are generally inspired by nature and have also got mythological attributions to it. Hence, the designs usually have images of Gods and Goddesses, geometric shapes, peacock motifs and round floral patterns in them. The rangoli design depictions may vary at times as they reflect the traditional folklore and practices which are unique to each area. Many such traditional rangoli motifs and patterns have been carried forward through generations, thus marking the symbol of good luck and prosperity.

One of the chief purpose of creating a Diwali rangoli design is decoration. Once the outline is made on the floor, it is filled in with materials like paints, colored rice water, gypsum powder, colored sand or dry pigment. Sometimes unprocessed materials like seeds, grains, spices, leaves or flower petals are also used. The base material is usually dry or wet granulated rice or dry flour, to which sindoor (vermilion), haldi (turmeric) and other colors are added. Chemical colors are a modern variation. The rangoli designs can also be in the form of abstract art. Rangoli is a simple two dimensional design. The most common way to make a rangoli is to pinch the thumb and the forefinger and let the color to freely run out from the gap.

Rangoli is a representation of India’s rich heritage. This also reinstates the fact that India is a land of festival and colors. Rangoli is called with different names in various parts of India. In southern part of India it is called as kolam, mandana in Rajasthan, chowkpurana in Northen India, alpana in Bengal, aripana in Bihar and so on and so forth. Diwali is mostly associated with rangolis. The designs are decorated by placing diyas in and around them with the belief of welcoming Goddess Lakshmi.


Rangoli patterns are now being used to reach new horizons. It has now widened its gamut by being used in the kindergarten schools for the development of fine motor skills. Children are given attractive designs to color with precision and thus to improve on their concentration levels. It also allows the creativity and imagination of the child to come in the forefront as they experiment with colors. It is an easy way to introduce the child to Indian culture and tradition.
