A kitchen is the soul of a house, it’s where you cook and serve love to your family. It’s a place where women spend most of their time. Therefore, before deciding on a kitchen design, keep their need and comfortable in mind.

It’s really exciting and fun to design your own kitchen. You need to consider a lot of important factors while designing a fully functional kitchen.

Before you start working on your kitchen design, decide how you want it? You want it to be efficient, cosy, or just plain beautiful. Whatever it may be, just keep it right to make cooking a pleasurable experience.

First decide the kind of look you would like to go for, and then do some research. Go through magazines, catalogues, photo books, web sites, or you can even visit a kitchen design centre. There are many different styles you could go for – contemporary, rustic, classic, traditional, industrial, transitional, or eclectic. Choose any one.

If you are hiring a professional, talk to your designer about it. You can choose any style whichever you please, but it’s better to keep it as functional as possible.

It is very easy to go overboard when planning for your dream kitchen design. Hence, it’s best to decide on a budget before you start shopping. Do remember, expensive is not always stylish. You can easily create a kitchen with a small budget without compromising on its quality.

Once you set a budget, you have a better idea on where to spend and to hold back. And you won’t have to give up on anything, because you will have made wise financial decisions all along.

Keep the shape and size of the room in mind before deciding on your kitchen design. Take careful measurements, and then decide on how to use the space. Go for appliances and fixtures that would fit into the available space. Don’t put in too big or too many appliances or you may end up feeling cramped.

Whether your kitchen is small, medium, or large, you can easily design it to meet your requirements, and to look beautiful and elegant too.

An ideal kitchen design is the one where refrigerator, sink and stove form a triangle.  It allows the most effective work flow. The work triangle makes it easier for you to cook, move around and work in the kitchen. Hence, for a functional kitchen, you need to keep this space clear.

Try to keep all your appliances away from your working triangle. If you have an island, and if you are planning to add seating to it, make sure there’s enough clearance.

Next thing you need to consider is the shape of your kitchen counter. There are three main types of kitchen design – the U shape, the L shape, and the G shape.  The amount of counters you add, and where you put it, will depend on how you plan to use the kitchen.

Use the available space efficiently while deciding on your kitchen design. Experts suggest that you add at least 24 inches of counter space to the right of the oven and sink and 18 inches to the left of these appliances.

Islands look really cool and can add some more counter space to your kitchen. You can use your island as an extra counter, a place to serve food, or just to entertain your guests. But, a poorly planned island can be a nightmare.

Remember, don’t add an island if you have a small kitchen. And, if you are planning to add one, make sure there is a clearance of 5 feet between the counter and the island.

Cabinets and drawers can help you create storage in your kitchen.  Ideally, you should build separate racks and storage units for different items.

In a small kitchen, it’s important to get the most out of the corners. Plan it right and put up enough cabinets and drawers for storing different things such as cutlery, appliances, grocery, vegetables, spice and much more.

A kitchen should have enough light, be it natural or artificial. Therefore, plan it so, as lack of proper lighting can hinder your activities. Use under-cabinet and recessed lighting where ever required.

You need to have proper ventilation to remove the odour and heat generated while cooking. Most appliances release heat, therefore should not be placed too close to the walls. They need ventilation for efficient functioning. So, while making your kitchen design see that it has lots of windows and a chimney in place.
